Supplemental Therapies

Infrared saunas are an effective tool for natural healing and prevention. Infrared light has the ability to penetrate human tissue. This in turn produces a host of anti-aging health benefits. The Infrared sauna is one of the “hottest” home therapies for overall healthier living.

It has incredible therapeutic benefits including:

Detoxification: Sweating is the body’s safe and natural way to heal & stay healthy. Far infrared sauna benefits the body by heating it directly causing a rise in core temperature. This results in a deep, detoxifying sweat at the cellular level, where toxins reside.

Relaxation: Unlike traditional saunas which operate at extremely harsh temperatures, infrared is a gentle, soothing and therapeutic heat, promoting relaxation and improved sleep. Infrared sauna benefits include therapy that help you relax while receiving an invigorating deep tissue sweat. Upon leaving, you’ll feel fully refreshed after each session.

Lower Blood Pressure: Infrared saunas induce a deep sweat to make the heart pump faster, which in turn increases blood flow, lowers blood pressure and helps circulation. Scientific evidence shows using an infrared sauna a couple times a week, lowers blood pressure.

Anti-Aging & Skin Purification: The near infrared wavelength (sometimes referred to as Red Light Therapy) is the most effective wavelength for healing the epidermis and dermis layers of the skin. Near infrared treatments stimulate collagen production to reduce wrinkles and improve overall skin tone.

Cell Health: Near infrared therapy stimulates the circulatory system and more fully oxygenate the body’s cells. Better blood circulation means more toxins flow from the cellular level to the skin’s surface. This improves cell health, aids in muscle recovery and strengthens the immune system.

Weight Loss: Studies have shown that benefits of an infrared sauna session can burn upwards of 600 calories while you relax! As the body works to cool itself, there is a substantial increase in heart rate, cardiac output, and metabolic rate. This is what causes the body to burn more calories!

Pain Relief: Infrared heat penetrates tissue, joints, and muscles to relieve anything from minor aches and pains to chronic pain conditions, such as fibromyalgia. Pain management professionals incorporate infrared heat therapy into treatment plans all the time. Decrease pain and muscle spasms to speed up recovery time.

Improved Circulation: Heating the muscles with infrared rays produces an increase in blood flow similar to blow flow during exercise. Regular infrared sauna use can significantly stimulate blood flow up to twice the normal rate.

Wound Healing: Scientific research has concluded that near infrared therapy greatly enhances the skin’s healing process. It promotes faster cell regeneration and human tissue growth. Human cell growth increases to repair wounds and prevents infection.

Ultrasound is a therapeutic modality that has been used by physical therapists since the 1940s. It is applied using a round-headed wand or probe that is put in direct contact with the patient’s skin. The gel we use is used on all surfaces of the head in order to reduce friction and assist in the transmission of the ultrasonic waves. Therapeutic ultrasound is in the frequency range of about 0.8-3.0 MHz.

Ultrasound can produce many effects including specific potential heating effect. The benefits are as follows: increase in tissue relaxation, local blood flow, and scar tissue breakdown. All of these benefits can be used to help reduce local swelling and chronic inflammation. Ultrasound promotes bone fracture healing. The good thing is, the intensity or power density of the ultrasound can be adjusted, depending on the desired effect. A greater power density (measured in watt/cm2) is often used in cases where scar tissue breakdown is the goal.

Conditions in which ultrasound may be used for: ligament sprains, muscle strainstendonitis, joint inflammation, plantar fasciitismetatarsalgia, facet irritation, impingement syndromebursitisrheumatoid arthritisosteoarthritis, and scar tissue adhesion.

Interferential Electrical Stimulation is a physical therapy modality that has been used for many years, as it works on peripheral nerve stimulation and helps reduce pain and inflammation in specific areas causing problems such as lower back pain.

The basic principle of Interferential Therapy (IFT) is to utilize the significant physiological effects of low frequency (<250pps) electrical stimulation of nerves without the associated painful and somewhat unpleasant side effects sometimes associated with low-frequency stimulation.

IFT helps with four key areas:

Pain Relief – by stimulating pain-gate mechanisms at higher frequencies and also activating opioid mechanisms at lower frequencies.

Muscle Stimulation – by electrically stimulating the motor nerves it can create muscular contractions and can help activate muscles that are not voluntary contracting.

Blood Flow – by stimulating the motor fibers and causing muscular contraction which will bring about a local metabolic and vascular change and increase blood flow to that area.

Reduction in Oedema – by creating local muscle contraction and increasing vascular changes to the area it can encourage reabsorption of tissue fluid and lead to a reduction in edema

Adjustments, (or manipulation as they’re sometimes referred to) are the minor movement of vertebrae in the spine. The objective of this movement is to realign vertebrae that have moved out of place for a number of reasons, ranging from normal daily activity to trauma, such as a car accident.
When these vertebrae are out of place, it has an overall systemic effect from muscular to the central nervous system. Without proper alignment and flow of all nerves and systems in the body from the brain, we can’t function at our peak.

An adjustment is often a pressure from the chiropractor utilizing the hands or an instrument to move a vertebrae back into place. This happens with a quick movement and is often without discomfort. Imagine hearing a noise that sounds like you’re cracking your knuckles – this is referred to as joint cavitation. It is the release of gases such as oxygen and nitrogen from the joint.

Overall, adjustments are an excellent way to keep the body functioning at its highest level. When your body is in alignment, it gains the ability to respond and perform as it was designed to.

In a similar fashion to palpation, the Pro-Adjuster can determine whether the vertebra’s motion is too rigid or too fluid. It does this while you are sitting comfortably upright in a chair. The Doctor moves a sophisticated instrument up and down your spine to locate the area of subluxation. Once the Doctor locates the subluxation, the instrument gently taps, or adjusts, the vertebra into a normal state of motion. The spine should not be too rigid (hypo-mobile). However, instead of utilizing the doctor’s judgment as to what areas are hyper-mobile or hypo-mobile, the Pro-Adjuster measures precise levels of motion. It is able to do this by state of the art technology. Therefore, the Pro-Adjuster can isolate a problem area faster and more accurately than manual procedures.
Orthotics are a great way to help with issues related to walking and alignment. Some of these include: the knee, foot and lower back pain. The need for orthotics is often related to an issue with the natural functioning of the foot. Orthotics will often help to realign the bones within the foot and ankle. This takes pressure off other parts of the body such as the back, neck, shoulders and hips. In addition, orthotics will help with distributing your weight properly and take further pressure off of toes, bunions and other parts of the foot.

Orthotics are for anyone with an issue or discomfort relating to walking or imbalances in the body. These can be worn on a daily basis and be utilized during most activities to take further stress off the body.

Orthotics can often be prescribed by your chiropractor. It can last well over a year in most cases. This is a great investment into your overall health and well-being via a bio-mechanical standpoint.
Traction Roller-Table

The Quantum 400 Intersegmental Roller Table is the ultimate spinal mobilization and pre-adjustment chiropractic tool. Besides separating spinal vertebrae with a rolling form of intersegmental traction, the perfectly shaped rollers simultaneously break up stubborn muscle spasms with deep shiatsu massage.

Intersegmental traction is not “traction” in the familiar sense. Conventional spinal traction, as known to most doctors and patients offers a longitudinal force applied to either the cervical or lumbar spine via attachment of a pulling apparatus from either the head or pelvis. On the contrary, intersegmental traction may more appropriately be termed “passive spinal mobilization.” In practice, roller table therapy is applied with the user lying supine. Connecting vertebral segments are lifted into extension by a dorsal to ventral force – applied by an elliptical rolling massage action that is continuously moving up and down the torso on a track. Such therapeutic, segmental spinal joint extension serves to counteract the fatigue and stress that builds from resisting gravitational forces; while working and performing a daily routine in a predominantly flexed (bent forward) position.

Therapeutic Effects/benefits of Passive Segmental Spinal Mobilization

  1. Centripedal forces or negative pressure elicited internal to the spinal discs
  2. Cyriax demonstrates muscle relaxation, verified by EMG and it appears to break spasms in deep muscles like rotatores and multifidi
  3. Passive mobilization of the facet joints in the posterior portion of the spine
  4. Hydraulic pumping of fluid and nutrients to and from the cartilage cells of the spinal disks
